The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) works to defend and expand civil rights and liberties - for single mothers. Whether we are arguing in the courts, leading campaigns, advocating in communities, growing our supporter and follower base, building new tech platforms, and managing people and budgets, our team engage in meaningful work that advances our mission. We are looking for passionate, driven people to join us.

 

We are proud to offer career and job readiness skills through our internship opportunities, which offers the next generation of civil rights advocates and social justice activists the chance to delve into our organization's robust agenda. Future civil rights leaders and social justice advocates who are committed to advancing the values of THESMAP will receive hands-on experience working to improve issues that marginalize single mothers.

 

When you intern with The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) you can expect the following:

 

EXPOSURE. You will engage with the issues and the people at the forefront of today’s most impactful civil liberties and civil rights fights and victories.

 

EXPERIENCE. You will contribute to meaningful work in one of our departments while developing substantive skills and professional experience.

 

MENTORSHIP. You will learn from The Single Mother Advancement Project’s (THESMAP’s) leadership and team members on a range of topics through trainings and on-the-job learning.

 

STIPEND. You will receive a stipend for a full-time or part-time eight (8) week internship, which may be offset by any outside funding received.

THE SINGLE MOTHER ADVANCEMENT PROJECT (THESMAP)

PUBLIC POLICY INTERNSHIP

 

The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) is always seeking highly qualified and motivated individuals to serve as interns. These individuals will conduct sophisticated legislative and public policy research on some of the most pressing civil rights and social justice challenges facing single mothers. This work is complex, high stakes, and performed to an exact standard.

 

Project assignments will touch upon all aspects of our social justice advocacy agenda, including but not limited to childcare, housing, employment, civil rights issues, criminal justice, economic development, education, environmental justice, health policy, international affairs, voting rights, and youth engagement. Successful candidates should have a record of outstanding academic achievement and must have the ability to manage complex projects.

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

 

Applicants must:

 

  • Be an active member of The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP). If you are not a member of THESMAP, join today.

  • Submit a short essay demonstrating your interest in and commitment to promoting the advancement of single mothers.

  • Submit an internship cover letter and resume.

  • Submit three letters of recommendation.

 

This internship program not only exposes students and young professionals to diverse issues and their complexities, but also provides a network of resources and practitioners for guidance.
