    The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) recognizes there may be occasions where a donation was made in error, and we are happy to work with you to correct it.     Volunteering is up to you. You can find volunteering opportunities that only take one hour per month to five days a week - or more. Some roles are for one-time events, some are short term, and others might need a six-month commitment or longer. You can volunteer at any time of the week, day, or night. While a lot of volunteering takes place during office hours, you can volunteer in the evenings and on the weekends too. Some organizations ask for a particular commitment from their volunteers while others take a more flexible approach. Certain roles like befriending require building trust, which is why a certain amount of commitment is required. Please think carefully about the amount of commitment you can give before choosing to volunteer.
  • Will I get trained?
    The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) provides training to prepare you for the position you volunteer for. The amount of training you require will depend on that position’s duties and responsibilities.
  • Can I leave or change positions if I do not like the position I’m trained for?
    As a volunteer you are not obligated to continue in or are limited to any position you have been trained for. The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) encourages all volunteers to train in multiple areas across the organization to increase your knowledge and skills, develop and grow professionally, and to increase your personal network.
  • Can I volunteer from home?
    Yes. Volunteering from home is a very popular way to The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) advance our initiatives.
  • How old do I have to be to Volunteer?
    There are no age limits laws for volunteering; however, The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) requires parental permission for anyone under the age of eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Are my expenses paid as a volunteer?
    The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) does not cover the general expenses a volunteer may incur. However, on a case-by-case basis, we will reimburse out of the ordinary expenses. The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) will pay all expenses associated with official business activities (out of city/state travel, meals, lodging, etc.). Clothing expenses are also paid when special clothing is required.
  • Do I need qualifications?
    Qualifications are not required to volunteer with The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP). However, some volunteering opportunities such as counselling and those requiring specific skills and experience, require qualification. If qualifications are needed it will be stated in the volunteer role description.
  • Can I get a qualification or an award as a volunteer?
    By volunteering you will gain valuable experience, develop your skills, and be able to secure the organization’s highest reference endorsement. The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) also present Certificates of Recognition, Appreciation plaques/trophies, and honorary dinners for their dedication to our organization’s initiatives.
  • I have a criminal record; can I still volunteer?
    If you have a criminal record, you can still volunteer but there are some limitations. The nature of your criminal record will determine your duties and responsibilities limits.

    The Single Mother Advancement Project’s (THESMAP’s) Guardian Initiative is an generosity program that encourages donors to provide reliable monthly support, which enables The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) to respond immediately when new threats to the civil liberties of single mothers arise. As a Guardian, you help fuel the fight for single mothers’ rights for the long haul.
  • How do I join The Single Mother Advancement Project’s (THESMAP’s) Guardian Initiative?
    The need has never been greater for single mother supporters to join The Single Mother Advancement Project (THESMAP) Guardian Initiative.   • As a Guardian program member will I still need to renew my membership?
    No. Your monthly pledge will automatically renew your membership; you will not have to worry about renewing if your pledge is active.
